1. Frenchies are the top dogs in America
Over the last decade, the popularity of French Bulldogs has surged not only in the US but all around the world. While in 2012 the Frenchie was ranked at No. 14 on the American Kennel Club’s (AKC) list of popularity, 2021 saw them climb all the way up to the second spot. In 2022 Frenchies finally took the amazing first place as announced by the AKC this month, with registrations increasing by over 1,000%! That brought an end to the Labrador Retriever’s 31-year reign as the most popular dog breed in America.

2. French Bulldogs are not from France
Did you know that French Bulldogs are not actually French? Originally, they were smaller versions of the English Bulldog and served as companion dogs for lace workers in the 18-century England. They were brought to France during the Industrial Revolution, where they were further bred with other small dog breeds. 3. French Bulldogs have a high level of emotional intelligence
Most likely because of their past as companion dogs, Frenchies have an impressive level of emotional intelligence. What that means is that they’re incredibly perceptive and have an uncanny ability to read the emotions of their humans. They are sensitive to the moods of those around them and will often react accordingly, providing comfort and support when needed. As they can connect with people on a deep level, Frenchies are a popular choice for individuals who suffer from anxiety, depression, or other emotional issues.

5. French Bulldogs need assistance to breed
Many people don’t know that French Bulldogs’ unique physical characteristics require special attention when it comes to breeding. Due to their short legs and narrow hips, Frenchies have difficulty mating naturally, which is why artificial insemination is necessary. Additionally, the mom’s narrow hips and her puppies’ big heads make C-sections the safest way to deliver Frenchie babies. While this may seem like an inconvenience, a reputable French Bulldog breeder will always take great care in ensuring that their breeding practices prioritize the well-being of both the mom and her pups.
6. Frenchies fart a lot
It’s true – French Bulldogs are gassy little creatures, known for their tendency to break wind at the most inconvenient times. Their small size and innocent look may deceive you, but they can clear a room faster than a fire alarm! There are several reasons why Frenchies fart so much, including their short-snouted faces, which can cause them to swallow air when they eat or drink. 7. Frenchies are surprisingly agile
French Bulldogs are much more athletic than they appear! Despite their short legs and stout build, they are actually quite fast runners. While they might not be able to keep up with a greyhound, they can run at speeds of up to 15 miles per hour. They are also surprisingly agile and can jump really high for a dog of their size. So, if you enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking and jogging, you won’t have to leave your Frenchie at home!
On the other hand, it’s crucial not to overexercise your Frenchie despite their energetic nature. Because of their flat faces it is harder for them to regulate their body temperature, so you should always watch out for signs of overheating. They also have a delicate bone structure so you should limit jumping from high spaces as much as possible to prevent any accidents.
8. French Bulldogs can’t swim by nature
While many dogs are natural swimmers, French Bulldogs are definitely not. Their short legs and stout bodies can make it difficult to stay afloat and swim efficiently, putting them at risk of drowning. While some Frenchies may learn to swim with training and a life vest, it’s important to remember that it’s not a natural ability for them. So, if you have a pool make sure to keep an eye on them at all times!
Even though Frenchies may not win any doggy swimming competitions, that doesn’t mean that they can’t enjoy water activities. If you give them a kiddie pool or a shallow pond to splash around in, they’ll be in puppy heaven! They also really enjoy going on a boating adventure or to the beach, just have a vest ready and your baby is good to go!
9. There was a Frenchie on the Titanic
Speaking of boats, did you know that the Titanic had a Frenchie passenger? In 1912 French Bulldogs were regarded as the elite class’ favorite breed, and according to the ship records, there was a black-colored French Bulldog on board. His name was Gamin de Pycombe and his owner was a young US banker, who insured the dog for an enormous amount of $750! Considering the 100 years of inflation, that amount is nearly $22K today! He is even commemorated in David Cameron’s movie Titanic which features a black-colored Frenchie for a moment. Sadly, history records that he was one of the many casualties of the tragedy.
