Top 25 French Bulldog Names: A Guide to Help You Choose

Last updated on 03.28.2026.

Names not only define people but our favorite four-legged friends as well. Puppies are basically treated like children, so it’s just natural that we put a lot of thought into finding the perfect names that will match their character and appearance best. This article is about how to find the perfect French Bulldog name that suits your pup’s personality, looks and charm. In this article, we share how we do this with our Frenchies and give some advice to the future parents as well. We also reveal our TomKings Family Members’ 25 favorite Frenchie names to give you some inspiration!

Key Takeaways:

  • The best Frenchie names are short (one to two syllables), easy to say and don’t sound like common commands.
  • Our TomKings Family Members voted Louie, Bella and Winston as the three most popular Frenchie names.
  • Most puppies learn their new name within two weeks when you pair it with treats and consistent practice.

How Do We Name Our Frenchie Puppies?

When talking to our family members, we often get complimented on how original our Frenchie puppies’ names are and how perfectly they seem to fit each of them. If you have been wondering, we will now reveal that the man behind all those creative and fitting names is the daddy of hundreds of Frenchies, our breeding expert Tom.

What’s his secret? Well, he actually has a list of hundreds of possible puppy names which he compiled from various sources on the internet. When the puppies are about six weeks old, he chooses a name from his list that he thinks will suit them most. Having got more than 10 years of experience with breeding Frenchies, it’s safe to say that he’s become quite good at finding the names that will perfectly match the Frenchies’ personalities and adorable faces.

Can you change the name of your chosen TomKings Frenchie?

If you are thinking about getting a Frenchie from us, you’ve been probably wondering if you can change their original name. The short answer is: you most definitely can! In fact, the majority of our Frenchie parents decide to rename their new babies. We are completely fine with that (even Tom!) and actually enjoy finding out what the new names turn out to be.

You might also wonder if it will be any problem for the puppies to learn a completely new name. Frenchies are really smart, so this little change won’t bother them too much, they will pick up their new names quickly. Towards the end of the article, you’ll find some tips about how you can train your new Frenchie to listen to their new name!

How to Select the Best Name for Your Frenchie?

Make sure you like it!

The first and most important consideration when naming your Frenchie is that you like the name you’re giving and enjoy saying it. This might be obvious, but if you actually think about it, you’ll be using it quite a lot during the next 10-15 years, so you’ll want to pick one that you’re really fond of. If you go with your gut, we’re 100% sure you’ll find the perfect name for your new pup, which will make everyone happy!

Keep it short!

If you really want to get it right, we have a couple of practical tips that may come in handy. First, it’s always a better idea to go for a shorter name that is easy to remember, a rule of thumb is that it shouldn’t really be longer than two syllables. Long and unique names are without a doubt very special and will make your puppy stand out of the crowd, but make sure to have a shorter nickname in store by which you will actually call your Frenchie.

The importance of sounds

Here’s an interesting fact which you may have not known about: dogs actually only learn the vowels in their names, which means that they’ll also listen to any other word which contains the same vowels. Crazy right?! That’s why it’s recommended to avoid names that sound similar to command words in order not to confuse your Frenchie. For example, Ray may not be a great option as it sounds a lot like Stay! Also, since two-syllable names have more vowels, that will make it easier for them to remember.

Test it out!

Some of our future Frenchie parents have no difficulties picking a new name before actually meeting their new fur baby, but some may find it really hard to make a decision before the big day comes. If you belong to the second group, don’t worry a bit! You can use your first few days together to test out some options, you can even leave it up to your pup if they seem to be more responsive to a certain name. When you finally got it, make sure you stick with it!

Think long-term

A name that sounds adorable for a tiny eight-week-old puppy should still feel right when your Frenchie is a confident, full-grown adult. “Baby” or “Tiny” might suit them now, but consider how it will feel calling that name in a few years. The best Frenchie names are timeless and grow with your dog, so pick one you’ll still love saying when your pup is all grown up.

Match the name to personality

Every Frenchie has a unique personality. Some are playful clowns, others are calm cuddlers and some are stubborn little royals who act like they own the place. Spending a day or two observing your pup’s character before committing to a name can lead to a much better fit.

A bold, fearless Frenchie might suit “Diesel” perfectly, while a gentle, affectionate one might be more of a “Willow.”

You could also draw inspiration from mythology (Atlas, Freya, Athena), world cuisines (Biscotti, Mochi, Tahini) or even gemstones (Onyx, Opal, Jasper).

Whatever direction you go, a unique name is a great conversation starter and will make your Frenchie truly one of a kind.

10 Funny French Bulldog Names

Frenchies are natural comedians with their expressive faces and silly antics, so why not give them a name to match? Here are ten funny French Bulldog names that are sure to get a laugh:

  1. Bark Twain
  2. Chewbarka
  3. Sir Snores-a-Lot

Funny names work best when they’re still easy to call out in public without making you blush. “Pickle” or “Waffle” will always get smiles and your Frenchie won’t mind one bit.

How to Train Your Frenchie to Listen to Their New Name?

When you finally got the perfect name that you’re really happy with, your next task is to make sure your Frenchie actually listens to it! There’s a very effective practice that you’ll need to do for a couple of weeks after getting your puppy. Yes, it involves treats! Whenever you say your puppy’s name out loud and they look at you, give them a treat and some praise.

You should repeat this multiple times a day, first in a calm environment with no distractions, where your puppy can easily pay attention to you. Then, you need to continue doing this in other situations where there’s more and more distractions to make sure they stop what they’re doing right away and come to you every time you call them. They usually learn this within 2 weeks!

A common mistake that you can make is that you slightly overdo it and use their name way too much. In that case, your Frenchie will learn that you call them all the time and they don’t necessarily need to pay attention to you as there are will be no consequences if they don’t. Praise them in some way every time they listen to you, not when they feel like it but when you expect that from them. This is very important on your way to becoming your puppy’s pack leader!

Final Thoughts

Naming your Frenchie is one of the first bonding moments you’ll share with your new pup. Whether you go with a classic like Bella, something exotic like Bijou or a funny pick like Pickle, the best name is the one that feels right to you and fits your Frenchie’s unique personality. Keep it short, make sure it sounds nothing like a command and don’t stress too much. You’ll know it when you hear it!
