ToggleFrench Bulldog Temperament In a Nutshell
If you’ve ever met a Frenchie, you know: this breed comes with a huge personality. They are clever, playful, and full of character. They may be small in size but are definitely big on humor, with a natural talent for making people laugh, often without even trying.
Each of them is a little different, but what they all share is a deep, loyal bond with their humans. French Bulldogs weren’t bred to herd, hunt, or guard. They were bred for one purpose only: to be by your side as companion dogs. And it shows. They crave attention, live for human company, and have a way of making you feel like the most important person in the world.
And while their personalities are larger than life, their temperaments are remarkably balanced. According to the American Temperament Test Society, French Bulldogs have an impressive 96.2% pass rate, which just proves how steady, and people-friendly they truly are.
There are countless things to love about Frenchies, but a few traits stand out time and time again. We’ve picked the five that our TomKings Frenchie parents mention most often, so let’s see what it is that makes them so special!
1. Frenchies Are Insanely Affectionate
French Bulldogs don’t just like being close to you, they literally need it. These dogs were born to be companions, and they take that role seriously. Whether you’re watching TV, folding laundry, or working from home, chances are your Frenchie is right there with you… or preferably on you.
If you’re looking to your mental health, a French Bulldog is a wonderful choice as they’re experts at providing emotional support. They’re world-class cuddlers who show love in their own quirky ways: with kisses, snuggles, or just quietly being by your side. This level of attachment might surprise new owners, but for most, it quickly becomes their favorite thing.
“SKYE and MICKIE truly love me because they are my Velcro dogs. They even convinced LACIE to interfere with my personal space. It’s just the way that it is.” – Victoria

“Theo has enhanced our life with his love, curiosity and desire to be included in all aspects of our life. He brings joy to us through being a family member and participant in our lives, almost like another human versus just a pet.” – Phil
If you’re looking for a dog who’s always happy to be close, and who will return your love tenfold, a Frenchie is the perfect match.
2. Frenchies Are Extremely Friendly with Kids and Other Pets
One of the most heartwarming things about Frenchies is how naturally gentle and friendly they are, especially with children and other pets. Their easygoing nature makes them ideal companions for families of all kinds. Whether it’s a toddler learning to pet gently, a cat ruling the house, or a pack of playful kids in the backyard, a Frenchie usually fits right in.
They’re patient, social, and full of love to give, not just to you, but to everyone they meet. That’s why so many of our families tell us their Frenchie instantly became best friends with the whole household.
“My Frenchie LOVES my kids! He protects them. He does whatever they want with him, like staying in a certain position lying on bed. When my girl takes baths, he patiently waits staring at the door for an hour just there… waiting for her. My kids are EVERYTHING to him. He waits on the door for them to come back from school. It is an amazing bond.” – Maria

“Loves, loves small children. If the doorbell rings Lola assumes it is her “girl squad” and she gets massively excited! These pups come well socialized to children. I think it is their strong start on the farm from TKK children and adults.” – Helen
If you have a full house or are planning to grow your family, a Frenchie will likely be your calmest, kindest team member.
3. Frenchies Are Smart
French Bulldogs may look like little clowns, but behind those adorable faces is a surprisingly sharp mind. They’re quick learners with strong instincts, great emotional awareness, and a clear sense of what they want. That last part is key: because while Frenchies are smart, they’re also famously stubborn. They know exactly what you’re asking… they just might not feel like doing it right away.
What makes them so intelligent isn’t just their ability to learn commands (which they do, especially with food motivation). It’s how they read people. Frenchies are incredibly tuned in to human emotions and body language. They know when you need a cuddle, when you’re upset, and when it’s time to be silly just to make you laugh.
“Ziggy is my best friend. Whenever I am stressed, anxious, sad, or really just upset in any way he comes and lays on me which makes me feel grounded. When excited, I feel he is excited too. I can tell he understands the difference in my tone of voice.” – Valeria

“Ilka was stubborn at first. But we got she was a FOOD driven girl so learned quickly… I was so surprised to see her learn commands so quickly, even crate training we could make her adapt using treats, toys, kong treats!” – Kripa
If you’re thinking about getting a dog who can read you like a book, a Frenchie might be your perfect match. Just be ready for a bit of sass: it’s part of the package, and honestly, part of the fun.
4. Frenchies can easily adapt to your lifestyle
One of the things we love most about this breed is how effortlessly they settle into almost any lifestyle. Apartment in the city? No problem. Suburban house with a yard? They’ll love it. Working from home? They’ll nap beside you for hours. Busy family with kids? They’ll be right in the middle of the action.
Whether you’re an early riser or a night owl, a couch potato or an outdoorsy person, Frenchies are all about fitting into your rhythm. They’re incredibly adaptable dogs who don’t need much to be happy: just you, a comfy spot to nap, and maybe a short walk or two. What matters most to them isn’t where they are. It’s who they’re with.
“Nyah adjusts really well to whatever our day may hold, whether it’s lounging around and cuddling, or car rides and outings. She’s fine as long as she gets to be with us.” – Lauren

If you’re looking for a dog who doesn’t just fit into your life but makes it better (no matter what your routine looks like), a Frenchie is for you.
5. Frenchies are hilarious
Last but not least, Frenchies are just total goofballs. Their funny little grunts, dramatic sighs, and random bursts of zoomies can turn even the worst day into a good one. They have this natural comedic timing that’s hard to explain until you’ve seen it for yourself.
French Bulldogs simply know how to steal the show. They’ll slide across the floor during zoomies, roll themselves in blankets, or sit like tiny humans with the most serious expression… just because they can. Frenchie are full of funny behaviors, it’s no wonder so many parents say their pup keeps them laughing every single day.
“Frenchies have so much personality and every day I find myself laughing at Buster’s behavior and am amazed at how well he’s adapted to our family. He always brings us and everyone he meets joy.” – Maja
“Does anyone else’s frenchie sit like a human? 🤣 I love her so much she cracks me up!” – Addy

If you’re looking for a dog who’ll make you laugh just by being themselves, a Frenchie is basically a live-in comedian, ready to brighten even the dullest day.
What Is It Like to Live with a French Bulldog?
We can tell you a lot about Frenchies, but when it comes to what it’s really like to live with one, no one says it better than the families who already do. So, we turned to the best source we have: our TomKings Frenchie Family. Here’s what they had to say:
“Having a Frenchie is like having a permanent toddler ❤️” – Nicole

“Unconditional love, chaos, unconditional loyalty, a bff forever happy and excited to see you. Pure joy and fun” – Jackie
“Lots of hugs and kisses with an ounce of mischievousness and a sprinkle of snoring” – Lyubov
“I’d say your home is going to become much happier! I’d say if you’ve had a dog before this will be a completely different experience. Then there is a tom king’s French bulldog. No health problems. Rock solid temperament. You will never have to worry about your Frenchie biting someone. Then there is the fan club. You won’t be able to walk a block without the fan club. Yes your Frenchie will sleep in your bed. Simply a spiritual experience. ♥️🐾” – James
“It is the absolute best!! They are pure joy and have so much love to offer. You will always have a buddy to share snacks with too (especially fruits and cheese).” – Johnny

“What it’s like living with a Frenchie, let’s start with the beginning of the day. You will wake up to them staring at you waiting for you to wake up, or you will be awoken by a paw brushing your hair telling you it’s time to get up. It will then be time for them to immediately go out side to do their business, come back in and need their tushy cleaned, yes some need their tushy cleaned. And then it’s BREAKFAST TIME! This is very exciting for them.
Once that is done then it’s time for them to follow you EVERYWHERE! To the bathroom, to the kitchen, the laundry room, or even just to get up and open the shades. If you like gardening, they will lay beside you while you garden and even sometimes try to help you. If your Frenchie loves car rides, once they hear the keys the race is on to the car and trust me you will lose! In the evening time it’s Breakfast time again(It’s always breakfast in our house) and once they are done it’s time for them to sit and watch you fix your dinner and hoping you will share. After all this it’s time to snuggle on the couch or in a chair. They are snugglers. Finally it’s bed time and they are wanting in your bed( if you allow it) to cuddle up right next to you or be like Mickey and literally sleep like a human, half in the covers and half out.

Living with a Frenchie is like having a little child that never grows up. They are always by your side, they are always showering you with love and they are always loyal. They just want to be with you. Living with a Frenchie is filled with non-stop laughs, love, and work. They know when you are stressed, sad, happy or mad. They truly feel your emotions.
Once you have a Frenchie you’ll most likely never own another breed of dog, because you can’t compare the love and affection you have with them. This is Mickey Lyn and he is so amazing and we miss him when we’re at work and we can’t wait to get home to him and the rest of our fur kids. We have 2 Frenchies and they are truly amazing kids.❤️❤️❤️” – Candita
