The English ancestors of the Frenchie were originally used in the brutal sport of bull baiting. Once bull baiting was outlawed and the Industrial Revolution sent English lace-makers across to France, their smaller “toy” bulldogs travelled along and quickly stole the hearts of Parisians. By the late Industrial Revolution years, the French Bulldog as we know it had become a favourite of city families.

The bull baiting chapter is firmly in the past. The modern Frenchie, fluffy or not, was shaped by families who just wanted a loving little one at their side. That’s exactly the personality you’ll meet today.

Beyond that obvious fluffy coat, you’ll spot all the classic Frenchie features:

• Trademark bat ears (often the fluffiest spot on the whole baby)
• Big, expressive eyes and a short, broad nose
• Short legs and a compact, sturdy frame
• A soft, plush coat that’s slightly longer all over, with the fluffiest hair around the bat ears, chest and belly

Here’s the fun part. Thanks to that recessive gene, no two fluffies look exactly alike. Some have a soft wave to their fluffy hair, others are dense and plush like a teddy. All of them are deeply huggable.

Grooming is easier than you’d think. Fluffies need only a touch more than short hair Frenchies: a gentle brush every few days keeps the coat soft and tangle-free, and a quick wipe of their facial folds keeps them comfortable. Once you find a rhythm, the longer fluffy hair is surprisingly low-maintenance.

One thing to keep in mind. Like every French Bulldog, fluffies have the classic flat-faced build, which makes them a bit more sensitive to hot weather than longer-nosed breeds.

Easy fix though. Stick to short walks during cooler hours in summer, keep your home comfortable during hot weather, and always have fresh water nearby. Honestly, a cool floor next to their favourite human is exactly where a fluffy wants to be anyway.

Long haired French Bulldogs aren’t currently part of the AKC breed standard, so you won’t typically see fluffies representing the breed at official dog shows.

Responsible breeders screen for the common Frenchie genetic markers and only pair parents who can give their babies the strongest possible start, which is the simplest way to avoid surprise health issues down the road.

When you’re researching, breeder reputation is the biggest signal to look for. A strong breeder reputation usually looks like this:

• Clear answers to every question, with full health testing records on the parents
• Babies raised inside a family home, never in puppy mills
