Obviously, like any other pet and human members of your family, your Frenchie pup needs regular grooming and bathing to keep his skin and coat healthy. Below we share our tips on how to do it so that you both enjoy it.
1. Start it right after your Frenchie arrives
It’s a misbelief that your pup has to settle in first before being bathed or groomed. They already had bathing experience at our farm and it shouldn’t be considered something extraordinary or terrible. Just take it easy and your pup will follow that mood.
Frequency varies from a weekly bath to a monthly, but no more than every 6 weeks. It depends on their lifestyle and the weather, how much time they spend outside, how muddy or hot the weather is. So overall the best piece of advice is to bathe them as needed and as you see fit.
2. Preparation is key
Before you start bathing your Frenchie, go over your pup’s body with a dryer to loosen any dirt from the skin and remove the dead coat. Checking and cleaning the ears and teeth are also part of the process, as well as cutting their nails. (Check out our How-to videos on how to do these.)
Use dog shampoo, preferably one for sensitive skin and make sure you also clean their face (including the wrinkles to avoid infection) and their nose. You might want to use a special facial cleanser for this purpose.
3. Grooming and brushing your Frenchie
Thanks to their short hair, Frenchies need minimal grooming, they shed much less than other breeds. Brush them every week to remove dead hair, which will result in less shedding.
4. Finishing touches
You can let your pup dry and if needed you can use a hydrating spray, and massage it into his or her skin.
Some parents experience tear stains on their puppy’s face and under the wrinkles. To avoid this, wipe their tear daily and use a natural moist made specifically for the tear stains.
Bathing can be a fun thing to do together, that also gives both of you the chance to spend some joyful moments.
Weather permitting you can do this outside, or in your bathroom.
5. Grooming services for your Frenchie
There are some parents who feel less comfortable bathing and grooming their pup themselves, especially the nose, ears, nails and anal glands. There’s nothing wrong with this, there are many good grooming companies, who come to do it at your place, or you can take your pup to them and wait until he or she is ready. However, even if you use a grooming service, make sure you do the brushing and check your pup’s ears and nose in between two occasions.
