The only fault of French Bulldogs is that – in most cases, – they die earlier than their parents. It’s a heartbreaking period and everyone has their own way of dealing with it. The question often comes up: is it right to adopt another puppy, and if yes, when is it the right time. We try to help with our below thoughts.
When is it the right time to adopt another puppy?
It’s absolutely normal to process your feelings of grief
Even if death is part of life, we can never get used to losing a best friend, a family member, a sweet puppy. Depending on the reason for death, some parents struggle with bad consciousness, guilt, and many other negative feelings, apart from grief.
‘You should get another puppy.’ – comes the advice from friends, and parents start questioning if it’s the right thing.
You should know that it’s absolutely normal to be sad and depressed and never be ashamed of experiencing and processing your feelings.

Still, food poisoning, accidents, and ageing happen, and parents ask us the question if it’s disrespectful to the late puppy to adopt another.
The straightforward answer is that neither us nor anybody else can and should tell you when to adopt another dog after your Frenchie dies.
For some people, it can seem to be selfish, or a betrayal to have another baby, but the fact is that the puppy we lost will never be with us again. Neither if we punish ourselves for ages, nor if we have another puppy. Nobody has the right to tell you when it’s the right time to have another furbaby.
Our experience
Our experience is that another Frenchie can help you heal your wounds. It’s worth having a look at newborn babies, adoption takes a few months anyway.
In all the cases when a parent adopted a new puppy after their French Bulldog died, we saw that parents are so happy with the new baby and never regret getting him or her as soon as possible.
Geri’s tip
My wife’s parents had a puppy who was hit by a car and my father-in-law felt extremely guilty and said that he will never have another puppy. His birthday was a couple of months later and we bought him another furbaby. He is absolutely grateful that he has Niagara (the new pup in his life!) I would say the earlier is the better
